Canada adjusts counter-tariff list amid U.S. trade tensions
Canada modified its planned counter-tariff list against U.S. products after receiving feedback from domestic industries, Finance Canada said late Wednesday.
The adjustments remove seafood and fish products from the list of items that would face retaliatory tariffs, according to the government statement. No additional details about the changes were provided.
Canada announced Tuesday it would increase tariffs on American steel and aluminum products to 50% from 25%. The government also plans to impose tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on hundreds of other U.S. exports, including clothing, apparel, appliances, and dairy products.
The tariff measures represent Canada’s response to recent duties imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Canadian businesses continue to operate under the impact of these U.S. tariffs while waiting for Ottawa’s planned counter-measures to take effect.
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said multiple times that the Trump administration will respond if Canada proceeds with additional retaliatory actions.
Finance Canada said it made the adjustments to protect against broader economic harm.
