Dexamethasone vanished from pharmacies in Islamabad

Islamabad: Dexamethasone is unavailable in the pharmacies of the country’s capital Islamabad.

Dexamethasone has been hailed by WHO for treating COVID-19 patients. Only yesterday Zafar Mirza – Special assistant or Health, tweeted to consider inclusion of the drug in the treatment for COVID-19 patients.

However, the profiteers taking advantage of the situation hoarded huge quantities. The drug otherwise is a widely and cheaply available medicine.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hamza Shafqat issued a notification on Wednesday. It read that special teams will be formed to take strict action against pharmacies/drug stores involved in hoarding of the medicine.

DC has called out to all pharmacies to make sure that Dexamethaone is readily available to patients on Doctor’s prescription. Stores have been instructed to maintain records of sales and purchase of the medicine.

Assistant Commissioners (ACs) will be responsible to check transparency in the process of supply of this medicine

Anyone involved in hoarding or selling the drug at high price will be taken under Hoarding Act 1977, Drug Act 1976 and Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP) 2012 Act Schedule-II.
