Abdul El-Sayed will win Michigan race, CNN projects, as Democrats secure historic majorities in the midterms

Here’s the latest

• Momentous sweep: Democrats have flipped control of both the House and Senate in a resounding and historic victory, CNN projects. They capitalized on President Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity to win significant power to check his final two years in office.

• President’s response: Trump told The New York Times he will accept the results, shutting down — for now — questions about whether he would challenge the outcome. And in an interview with Fox News, he said he didn’t see the GOP losses “as a hit on me.”

• Democratic Senate wins: Abdul El-Sayed will win the Michigan Senate seat, CNN projects, becoming the first Muslim senator in US history. Democrats flipped seven other Senate seats – in Ohio, Iowa, South Carolina, Maine, North Carolina, Kansas and Texas.

Mississippi Senate candidates address supporters in race that’s too early to call

By Karina Tsui

As Mississippi continues to tally ballots, both Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom addressed their watch parties early Wednesday.

Hyde-Smith, the incumbent, assured supporters that they were “in a good lead right now.”

“We still don’t have all the votes in, so we’re not calling all of it tonight, but we’re in a very good lead,” she said. “And I assure you, I will continue to be your US Senator.”

Colom also delivered an optimistic message, telling supporters: “I’m excited about our momentum.”

“I’m excited about where we are trending in counties that people thought we had no chance to compete in, and we’re winning in them,” he said.

CNN has not called the Mississippi Senate race. As of early Wednesday, 96% of the state’s ballots have been counted, with both candidates securing roughly half the votes in a tight, highly contested race.

Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur will win reelection to a 23rd term in Congress, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, once again fending off Republican Derek Merrin’s bid to flip Ohio’s 9th District.

Although Kaptur narrowly beat Merrin in 2024’s general election, Republicans hoped to have better luck this cycle after the seat was redrawn to be more GOP-friendly.

The veteran lawmaker is the longest-serving woman in Congress.
